My guess is that this is a precursor to a Lance Berkman trade. He'll get shipped out (White Sox?) for more prospects and Wallace will take over the everyday 1B'man job. [4 total replies]

8 game win streak followed by losing 5 of the next 7 or whatever it is now......I'd say they have a problem staying consistant SD.[/quote:afc9cc4173]

And the two games they won over the Cubs and Mets were lucky........
(could be/should be on a 7 game losing streak right now).
And no runs again, another shutout tonight.
The tone around here only changes as often as the Jekyll/Hyde Cards do. [23 total replies]

Really, that's probably their only option at this point. Zambrano can hit a ton.

We did it with Ankiel. I mean, Ank wasn't a COMPLETE bust. He had a decent end of '07 and a respectable '08.[/quote:33e0d865a7]

You'd be paying him 18 mil/per to ride the pines while Lee plays on the hope that he could start next year while never having the opportunity to go back to the minors and learn the position like Ankiel did. Will never, ever happen. They would release him, or trade him for a bag of peanuts and a little salary relief first. [11 total replies]

What's Wrong With Albert?

Pujols is not 100% and should be taking a rest. I understand he's Albert Pujols and all, but he grabbed his back while running to first the other night and he was limping late in the game last night. Time for a few days off.

We don't need a .182 in the last week, .196 in the last two weeks, .262 in the last month Albert Pujols in the middle of our lineup. Not when Craig was hitting well when up here. We've got guys who will exceed that performance and can play for a few days while Albert rests.

Better to rest him now and get him closer to 100% than to have him breaking down in the playoffs. [118 total replies]

How do we follow up on a 8 game win streak??? LOSE 4 of the next 5 and probably 2 of 3 from a team (the Mets) that just went 2-9 on a road trip.

During the winning streak there was a poster that said we needed to eat crow and some of asked for what, I think we're finding out why no crow was needed. Those who were ready to start the parade down Market I'd like to say this.....take a step back, be realisitc and look with your eyes and not your heart. Fundamentals are the worst we've seen in years and we're very inconsistant. If that comment does indeed get my Cardinal fan memebership pulled then so be it. Hardly any fundamentals, there are players that give effort when they see fit and bad habits have been formed because of it imo. Who in the crap will take this team by the horns and wake them up? I don't care what some people say, we are NOT a very good 1st/2nd place team. I repeat NOT,NOT,NOT. [5 total replies]

2010 MLB Draft Thread

Strauss in his chat today on STLToday.com answered this question. First I have heard about Jenkins in awhile. This is good news:

[quote:04c1f0b6f7]danandjonelle: I have been told that high school pitcher Tyrell Jenkins, one of our supplemental draft choices, was in St. Louis yesterday for a physical and I assume his signing is imminent. Since he is also a Baylor football/baseball recruit, do you think he will get more than slot money, which is $705,600.?

Joe Strauss: Jenkins would likely command more than slot. The Cardinals are believed close to signing two of their three high pitching picks, Seth Blair and Jenkins. [/quote:04c1f0b6f7] [98 total replies]

I agree with having the kids throw pitches. I set up a mound 60 feet out from the brick garage wall and got one of those rubber tee ball type balls when I played baseball in middle school. I'd easily throw 80-100 pitches a day whenever the weather was good enough to do it, most as hard as I could. That meant a lot of back-to-back-to-back 100 pitch days. Stretch the arm out afterwards and you were good the next day.

Only way to throw that many pitches is to train yourself to it. Nobody goes out there and tries to run a marathon after competing in 400 meter sprints for four years. Yet that's what a lot of professional coaches expect from their pitchers. They have to train for it. That means steadily increasing the work load. Not suddenly increasing it.
Yoda, congrats on the basement work. While you're on the right track, having the machine's at Lowe's/HD, etc. match a photo probably won't end up with the look you want. There are just too many variables with the camera coloring multiplied by the ink printing of a photo.

A quick google search for "ballpark green paint" came back with this link:
http://www.valspar.com/fieldcolors/ivy-green.jsp Yep, sadly it's featuring a Wrigley inspired version. But, it's a "ballpark green" color available at an easy to find place - Lowe's. (In comparison, it appears the "green monster" is a special color done by a local company in New England.)

Good luck and post the photos when complete! [5 total replies]

I absolutley agree with alot of things being said in this thread. I think there is a little bit of a perception problem. Let me give an example. People think that kids read less now then they did let's say 50 years ago. Actually there is no evidence for that perception whatsoever. Kids today spend as much time reading today as they did 50 years ago. As a percentage of their total free time it is certainly much less than 50 years ago. Kids today have much more free time and have more choices now than ever.
I don't go to near as many pro games now compared to even 5 years ago. I don't like the atmosphere as much as I used to. There is just way to much going on that just has nothing to do with the game.
When I was 14 I would leave at 8 in the morning( or when my last chore was done)on my bike with my glove and come home for lunch and then be out till I couldn't see because it was dark. I couldn't let my kids do that today. It's just not the same world. [18 total replies]

[quote:024a47bcf9="Tulcard"]Many memorable acquisitions/trades since I've been a Cardinal fan....

1. Brock for Broglio
2. Carlton traded was a mistake
3. Flood traded was a mistake
4. Ozzie for Templeton was brilliant
5. Never would have traded Ted Simmons
6. McGwire trade
7. Edmonds trade
8. Wainwright trade
9. Carpenter acquisition

many more.... 8)[/quote:024a47bcf9]

I agree with all of your choices. I think that the Brock trade was the most one-sided with the Cards coming out on top. The Carlton for Wise and the Haren for Mulder trades are the two on which we were hurt the most. [35 total replies]

Fair enough. In most cases i'd say play him, seeing as he's not going to get any better sitting on the bench, but in the middle of a pennant race, you've got to put your best foot forward. [9 total replies]

I also agree with Teezy. Trade Carp for a younger stud while Carp's stats/numbers are still appealing, because if you wait for a year or two and Carp's stats/numbers do start declining, then it's obvious your not going to get much in return for him, imho. In my 50 yrs. of watching Cardinals baseball I've seen alot of good/great players come-n-go, which is why I try not to get to attached to certain players, because I know sooner or later they'll be gone. So I say if the opportunity does present itself then go for it! [16 total replies]

[quote:f64efb5abf="Avenge02"]Ken Boyer has better numbers than probably half the guys in the hall. There is no excuse for guys like Andre Dawson, Gary Carter, ryne sandberg or even joe morgan to be there over him.[/quote:f64efb5abf]

Boyer got at least 25% of the vote only once, so I'm thinking that either you're smarter than the other 75% of the BBWAA, or you have a serious man crush on a guy who only won one MVP, and never finished in the Top 5 any other year.

Career Comparables: (from Baseball-Reference)

1. Bobby Bonilla
2. Reggie Smith
3. Del Ennis
4. Cy Williams
5. Paul O'Neill

Boyer was a solid player, but he's easily the least deserving retired number in Busch Stadium. If they had the option, I'm sure that ownership would go back on that one.

Interesting fact: Boyer led the league in errors (34) in 1963, the same year he won a gold glove (his 5th and final). His fielding % of .925 was only slightly better than a cardboard cutout of Ron Santo. [6 total replies]

Joe Torre not ruling out move to the Chicago Cubs

[quote:40f9ccf907="dansaint"]I don't think Joe goes to Chicago (unless maybe he wants to take a GM role since i think Hendry is on his way out)

I personally think it's gonna come down to 3 people for the Cubs:

Sandberg (if he doesn't get the job I could easily see him as the bench coach or the 3B coach)

Freddie Gonzalez

Joe Girardi (I could see him leave the Cubs to go back home to his 1st team and his home state)[/quote:40f9ccf907]

girardi would be stupid aswell, to leave the team that got him his rings, both as a player AND manager for a team with no rings since the dawn of time(oh wait, I remember a $2500 bonus for 1908)

Ryan Sandberg gets the job, and proves an old saying "Nice Guys Finish Last" [9 total replies]

Scorers question

The official rulebook of Major League Baseball states in Rule 10.04:

(a) The official scorer shall credit the batter with a run batted in for every run that scores:
(1) unaided by an error and as part of a play begun by the batter's safe hit (including the batter's home run), sacrifice bunt, sacrifice fly, infield out or fielder's choice, unless Rule 10.04(b) applies;
(2) by reason of the batter becoming a runner with the bases full (because of a base on balls, an award of first base for being touched by a pitched ball or for interference or obstruction); or
(3) when, before two are out, an error is made on a play on which a runner from third base ordinarily would score.
(b) The official scorer shall not credit a run batted in

(1) when the batter grounds into a force double play or a reverse-force double play; or
(2) when a fielder is charged with an error because the fielder muffs a throw at first base that would have completed a force double play.
(c) The official scorer's judgment must determine whether a run batted in shall be credited for a run that scores when a fielder holds the ball or throws to a wrong base. Ordinarily, if the runner keeps going, the official scorer should credit a run batted in; if the runner stops and takes off again when the runner notices the misplay, the official scorer should credit the run as scored on a fielder's choice.
[quote:cface9568e="CardinalJayhawk"]With the offense in overdrive I hope Ryan isn't sent out. Put him at short and let him get his defense back. Defensively I think he has more of an upside than anyone else at SS. Tell him just worry about the D and bat him 8th. Just my opinion.[/quote:cface9568e]
I don't see him being sent out. If he goes to the minors, he gets put on waivers first, and I doubt he makes it through without getting picked up by someone else. Too much potential from last year for people to not take a chance on him. [15 total replies]

got to go to my first game of the year last weekend....way too late in the season for that, but I 'fixed' the issue by going fri/sat/sun....

For food.....
Kosher dog....man, compared to the old Best's Kosher those were disgusting....still good, but not near as good as the old stuff.

Haven't tried their 'replacement'

In the redbird club they had some AWESOME corned beef....

also...I tried banana peppers with jalapeno peppers on normal nachos...that was good too.

the hand rolled pretzels were not bad...better than a normal one, but I'd much rather have one of the ones they had back at the old busch that were cooked and still soft, not crunchy. [23 total replies]
