Cubs @ Cardinals, 7/4/2008

This is a VERY important series. IMHO, the Cubs are the class of the NL. Yes, it pains me to say that. So this series will help show where the Cards really rank against the best competition available in the NL. The nice thing is, the Cubs really struggle on the road, so that should give us an advantage.

If we can start this series off on a good note tonight, I like our matchups the rest of the weekend.

Come on Cardinals, start our holiday weekend off in style!!

Oh, and Albert, we know you were pressing on purpose against the Mets just so you could hit #300 against the Cubs. So let's get it out of the way early tonight. [7 total replies]

There is one reason Mac and the others didn't just 'fess up that I don't think has been considered.
What if he or even others that were given a legal immunity and just needed to confess were being pressured by MLB players, management, ownership or the commisioners office to not come clean? What if it were to come out that ownership was just turning a blind-eye to the whole thing? The threat of a life-time ban from baseball could be a very strong influence. [i:de598e9b0c]Seventh inning rally leads ‘Birds past Sounds [/i:de598e9b0c]

Memphis, Tenn. – Memphis used a seventh inning rally to beat Nashville 3-2 Wednesday night at AutoZone Park.

The Redbirds trailed 2-1 entering the bottom of the seventh. Jarrett Hoffpauir led off with a double and scored on Rico Washington’s single to center field to tie the game. After a Brian Barden single put runners on first and second Joe Mather came through with a single to left to score Washington. The bullpen took it from there with Mark Worrell and Kelvin Jimenez each tossing one scoreless inning apiece. Jimenez picked up his team-best sixth save. Nick Stavinoha, David Freese and Bryan Anderson all had two hits to lead the ‘Birds.

Ben Howard took the loss in relief for Nashville giving up two runs on four hits in 1.1 innings. Starter Mark DiFelice pitched five innings and allowed one run on three hits. Seven Memphis pitchers combined to scatter four Nashville hits and fan eight. Anthony Reyes started the game for the Redbirds on a major league rehab assignment and gave up one run on one hit in 2.1 innings. The right-hander threw 47 pitches, 27 strikes. Ron Flores earned the win with one inning of spotless relief.

Memphis wraps up their homestand and four-game series tomorrow night against Nashville. Clayton Mortensen gets the ball for the ‘Birds and will face left-hander Lindsay Gulin. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. with a fireworks show scheduled following the game. [117 total replies]

Quad Cities River Bandits (Low A)--2008

[b:6b0b490faf]BANDITS BATTLE WEATHER, LOSE THIRD STRAIGHT[/b:6b0b490faf]

[i:6b0b490faf]Wallace makes pro debut at Modern Woodmen Park[/i:6b0b490faf]

Cardinals’ first-rounder Brett Wallace made his professional debut on Wednesday night at Modern Woodmen Park, but the 13th overall pick in the 2008 draft could not save the Quad Cities River Bandits, who sat through a 1 hour and 22 minute rain delay before dropping their third straight game in a 9-3 loss to the Cedar Rapids Kernels.

Wallace went 0-for-2 with two walks in his first game as a pro, while Quad Cities (6-8, 39-39) managed just one hit and watched their overall record fall back to the .500 mark. Cedar Rapids (10-4, 42-40) carried a combined no-hitter into the eighth inning, when Pete Kozma sliced a base hit to right field for the Bandits’ only knock of the game.

Four Kernels pitchers combined on the one-hitter, though they also issued six walks, hit two batters, and allowed three runs, two of which were earned. Robert Fish got it started with one hitless inning, walking three and allowing all of the runs before the rain delay prematurely ended his night. Sammy Leon (2-1) took the mound after the delay and twirled four hitless frames out of the bullpen to earn the win. Ysmael Carmona then worked two hitless innings to take the no-no through seven frames, before Kozma’s single off Tom Kiely led off the eighth and finally got Quad Cities into the “hits” column.

Meanwhile, the Kernels hopped out to an early lead in the top of the second inning. Jay Brossman led off the frame with a solo homer to left and Cedar Rapids followed with three consecutive singles that loaded the bases. Two more runs crossed the plate on consecutive groundouts before Ryan Groth dropped a flare single into right, driving home another run on to stretch the Kernels’ lead to 4-0.

The rain began to fall as Quad Cities came to the plate in the bottom of the second. Nick Peoples was hit by a pitch to open the inning and back-to-back walks to Tommy Pham and Paul Vazquez loaded the bases with nobody out. But as the downpour worsened, the game was put into a rain delay before Ross Oeder could step to the plate.

The stoppage in play lasted nearly an hour and a half before the River Bandits resumed their rally. Oeder hit a bouncing ball towards third that Jerry Gonzalez picked up cleanly, but his throw to second base sailed into right field and allowed two runs to score. With men at the corners D’Marcus Ingram sent... [130 total replies]

What a crazy game. Back and forth. This team showed a lot of heart and fight in them.

That's 2 nights in a row we jump on them early (which has been a pattern all year) only to give it up later. I was also surprised to see Mulder in the game at that time. Dunc's HR was no doubt the game changing moment, but Glaus was the hero.

Those 4 HRs matched a season high, it was the 3rd time we had a walkoff homer, it was our 19th comeback win and we're now 18-14 in 1-run games. [44 total replies]

Cards Interested in LHP Brian Fuentes, OF Matt Holliday

[quote:4c12323792="undorgre"]Will never happen. Ever.

I'm a bit surprised at the number of people that seem to be willing to give up the players that Cardinals management cherish the most for a guy (Holliday) that would most likely never play an inning with the Cardinals after the 2009 season.

There are some potential trades that I'm sure I'd make but I wouldn't want to package 3 or 4 of our best prospects. I'm looking at risk versus reward... the addition of Holliday by no means guarantees success over the next 1.5 seasons... and to trade away the next 5 to 6 years worth of prospective talent could take it's toll in the coming seasons.[/quote:4c12323792]

THANK YOU!

People are caught up in pennant fever and loosing sight of the long term plan this team is on right now. We were supposed to be crap this year. Bottom of the division bad. Instead we've got the 2nd best record in the league. We've gotten to this point because of how great our young guns have been and how solid our farm system has become. I would be disgusted if Mo mortgaged the farm for a playoff push this year, when we're already poised to be great in 09. I don't want to jeopardize the long term potential of this club in a knee-jerk reaction to shore up our weaknesses in the short term. Holliday is good, but he's on the brink of demanding a huge financial investment and to be honest i'm a little leery of any slugger from Colorado. His home/road splits this season are good, but i'm a little sketchy on how those would hold up over the next 5-8 seasons moving from Coors to a pitchers park in Busch.

DON'T TRADE MO! [20 total replies]

[quote:1ca573d17f="wheresmyurinal"]Thread after thread about Carpenter and Mulder. Did any of you really think that either of the two would ever pitch again? Even if they had come back, did you really think they would be the same quality as before? If you were one of those, then much like the Cardinals ownership and management, you had your heads in the sand. I've never seen a ballclub try to stick with injured players as much as the Cardinals have done. I've never seen another team sign so many pitchers that are trying to recover from surgery or injury. Maybe we can convert a couple more relievers to starters and vice versa. It's really quite sad. The Cardinals have had a tradition of good pitching and defense. Now look at the mess we have. Unbelievable![/quote:1ca573d17f]

Springfield Cardinals (AA)--2008

[b:c7111b2557]CRAIG HOMERS TWICE IN LOSS[/b:c7111b2557]

The Midland RockHounds avoided a three-game sweep, scoring twice in the ninth and once in the tenth for an 8-7 victory over the Springfield Cardinals on Tuesday night at Hammons Field.

Jon Zeringue’s two-run homer tied the game in the ninth and Javier Herrera’s bases-loaded infield single drove home the eventual game-winner in the tenth.

Springfield broke a 5-5 tie in the seventh, as Allen Craig drew a bases-loaded walk, forcing home Jim Rapoport to make it 6-5.

The Cards added to their lead in the eighth, as Matt Pagnozzi’s suicide squeeze bunt was mishandled by Midland catcher Anthony Recker, allowing Isa Garcia to score to give the Cards a 7-5 lead.

Luke Gregerson came out of the Springfield bullpen to hold the lead in the ninth, but hit Recker with the first pitch of the inning. After Recker was forced at second base on a ground ball by Herrera, Zeringue belted his 13th homer of the year to the left of the batter’s eye in center field, a two-run shot to tie the game at 7-7.

Gregerson (4-5) allowed a one-out walk to Justin Sellers and then a double to Aaron Cunningham, putting runners at second and third with only one out. After an intentional walk to Tommy Everidge, Josh Dew was brought out of the Springfield pen. Dew fanned Recker on three pitches, but allowed an infield single to Herrera, which brought home Sellers from third, putting the Hounds in front for good at 8-7.

Midland closer Andrew Carignan (3-2), who worked 2 2/3 scoreless innings on the night, put the Cards down in order in the tenth for the win.

Springfield and Midland traded early offensive blows. Allen Craig and Aaron Cunningham both hit two home runs each. For Craig, the two-homer game is his second of the year, giving him 13 on the season. Cunningham’s multi-homer effort was his first of the year, giving him seven on the year.

The Cardinals (6-5) are still in a first-place tie with the Tulsa Drillers, atop the North Division’s Second Half Standings. Springfield will take a day off on Wednesday, then head to Frisco to open a six-game road trip, opening up on Thursday night. No starting pitchers have been named for Thursday’s series-opener in Frisco. The Redbirds return to Hammons Field on Thursday, July 10th, to take on the Northwest Arkansas Naturals. 1,500 fans on Thursday, July 10th, receive a free poster of Louie the Mascot, thanks to our friends at the Longhorn Grill. Totally agree with that.. this month had some nice surprises.. Jason LaRue, Aaron Miles, and Skip Schumaker.. others on offense didnt do so hot Ankiel (granted he would get XBH) and Ludwick.. Molina takes the collision.. the bullpen blowing a lot of these losses.. Looper and Lohse pitching great.. Springer has been doin awesome lately.. Izzy coming back to Mulder coming back last night.. Yeah it gets old but it is a major accomplishment. It seems like the announcers just don't know what else to talk about sometimes, especially the ones that don't normally broadcast Cards games since other than Pujols and Glaus they hardly know anything about the other players.
Cards Recall Thompson, Option Stavinoha

[quote:ef70a155af][b:ef70a155af]THOMPSON RECALLED[/b:ef70a155af]

Calling many of his relievers "fried" from overuse, manager Tony La Russa added frequent flyer Brad Thompson to the bullpen Monday and said the Cardinals will carry 13 pitchers for at least the four games against the New York Mets. "It's much needed," La Russa said.

The bullpen had to swallow 5 2/3 innings in Sunday's victory at Kansas City, and the Cardinals do not have an off day until the end of this seven-day home stand. Thompson, back again after a brief stay in Class AAA, can serve as either long relief or late-inning help.

"Versatility is something that is going to keep me in the big leagues," Thompson said after his start for the Cardinals on June 19. He threw five solid innings and was optioned out the next day. "Being able to bounce back and forth (from bullpen to rotation) ... I just need to figure how to keep sharp doing both things," he said.

Thompson made one appearance in the minors since his return there, allowing nine hits and four earned runs in four innings. To make room on the roster for the righthander, the Cardinals optioned outfielder Nick Stavinoha to Memphis.

Jason Isringhausen said his sore right knee had no ill effects following his 1 1/3 innings Sunday, even though he pitched without the knee brace prescribed. Isringhausen said the first brace he used was too bulky, so they "taped me up good" and he pitched. On Monday, he experimented with a softer, lighter brace to protect the strained knee.
[quote:8e6b5bb832="MissouriRedbird"]Once again Aaron Miles has been overlooked so he gets my vote for Player Of The Week. A .414 average combined with a .452 on base percentage over the last 7 days is good enough.[/quote:8e6b5bb832]

Got my Vote too. As I've Posted around the Board, IMO Miles may be the most under-appreciated player in MLB, at least by his own team's fans. Funny to read the complaints in the Winter threads when we re-signed him for 08. [7 total replies]

Very impressive win on the national stage. Hopefully people got to see what this team is all about.

Once again the SP is getting it done. I thought I heard the ESPN guys say that the Cardinals SP have more wins or have pitched more innings as a staff than anyother team. The team got going early and often giving Lohse the run support. For most of the night Lohse was getting ahead in th count and pretty much pitching what he wanted. I thought for a second that Lohse got drilled on that bunt attempt but the ump got the most of it. Ouch!

Defense backed him up turning 2 DP along with Ankiel's great catch. I haven't seen a MLB game in a while that had 5 combined errors for the game. The Mets defense is sloppy.

Miles extended his hitting streak to 12 games. Duncan must have found a lucky penny this morning on the way to the stadium. Since coming off of DL Pujols is 9-for-19 with 5 RBIs in 5 games.

Not only I'm a glad to see Mulder but to see another lefty on the mound. [19 total replies]

Draw a line connecting Minneapolis, Arlington, TX, Anaheim, and Seattle. If the Royals weren't around, there would be no AL team in that entire huge area. They have a really big market in that respect. I think that's at least part of the reason they didn't want to go to the NL. [7 total replies]

[quote:e2ddf1e6aa][b:e2ddf1e6aa]PUJOLS IS SATISFIED[/b:e2ddf1e6aa]

Albert Pujols played his fourth game Sunday since leaving the disabled list and responded with a first-inning double and a sixth-inning home run worth two RBIs — the 299th homer of his career. The outing lifted Pujols' average to .356 overall and left him seven for 14 since being activated.

Asked whether he was satisfied with how he is swinging the bat after missing time with a strained left calf, Pujols said, "I think anybody would be satisfied swinging the bat the way I am right now."

Pujols graduated in 1998 from Fort Osage High in nearby Independence and has consistently tormented the Royals. He has a .388 career average with 11 home runs and 39 RBIs against them in 147 at-bats.
