Allen Craig Ready For 2nd Chance at Making Big League Club

Wow, if I didn't know better, i'd say TLR may have found a new man-crush. Glad to see he's really enjoying watching these young guys get a shot. I'd still like to see Craig get some time at 3B, but it's looking more and more likely that he'll be on the big club, regardless. [17 total replies]

Section 166, Row 2 (Seats 6-9) Tickets For Sale

As in years past I have some of my season tickets for sale for the upcoming Cardinals regular season. Available games are listed below. The price for all 4 tickets is $140 to these games.

Monday, May 31 (Reds)
Wednesday, June 16 (Mariners)
Thursday, July 1 (Brewers)
Thursday, July 15 (Dodgers)
Monday, July 19 (Phillies)
Thursday, September 16 (Padres)
Tuesday, September 28 (Pirates)
Thursday, September 30 (Rockies)

Please note that I was able to make a slight upgrade with my left field seats for the 2010 season. In previous seasons my 4 seats were located in Section 167, Row 4 and starting this season my seats are in Section 166, Row 2 (seats 6-9). This is a fairly minor upgrade in terms of location (these seats are literally probably only 20 feet from where they were located last season) but they are now aisle seats, which is great. These seats are only 6 rows from the playing field.

Click here to see pictures from last year's post to see the vantage point from this seating area. These are excellent seats and are in great foul ball territory. Many CCH'ers have purchased tickets from me in the past and were very happy with their experience. These games are available on first-come, first-serve. Contact me if are interested in making a purchase. [0 total replies]

Kinney has MRI on Right Shoulder

[quote:2fdb5cda7a]JUPITER, Fla. — St. Louis Cardinals reliever Josh Kinney had a shoulder examination this morning to determine potential treatments for what he described as a “impingement” in the right joint. Kinney had an MRI taken of the shoulder, and he was back at the Cardinals’ facility in time for game time this afternoon.

The righthander said it’s not unusual for him to have his shoulder checked, and he described the sensation and the problem as something he’s worked through in previous springs.

“It’s not anything that I'm too worried about,” Kinney said.[/quote:2fdb5cda7a]

2010 Cardinal Approval Ratings

Approval is different from rating of performance Tully. We all support every Cardinal 100%, this isn't what the approval rating is. How can anyone be approved without seeing results? To be fair can we go on the early going here in ST? If so Mark's rating is waaaaay to high then because the offense hasn't done much.

Anything higher than a 70% (which is average) is to much at the present time, let's re-visit this after the season. [11 total replies]

What it's going to come down to is this. We know who the 3,4,5 guys are gonna be. We also agree that Yadi doesn't belong at the top of the order. So that leaves Ras, Freese and Yadi for the 6,7,8th spots. I see no reason to hit Yadi in front of either of these guys at least to start off the season. Rasmus and Freese both have the potential to become good RBI guys and both have much better speed than Yadi. There's no need to put Yadi in front of them to slow them down. Let them get on base and have Yadi move them over which he is good at when not hitting into DP's. I vote Yadi batting eighth and pitcher 9th. Just my opin. [11 total replies]

Kyle McClellan In The Mix For A Spot In Rotation

A lot of this discussion is really just about who is #5 on opening day. Chances are one of the 5 starters will go in the DL and we will need a replacement so both will undoubtably get a few starts and their longevity in the rotation will be determined by that.

Personally, I would like to see opening day with at least one lefty in the rotation and that should be Hill if he can find control. Then Mac replaces the first starter who is injured. And if Garcia is showing no ill effects to his surgery he or Lynn are there next in line.

It's a long season. Unless Hill has lost the ability to throw strikes I'm betting both guys are on the roster at some point this year. [12 total replies]

One thing that I have always admired about Pujols is the fact that he honestly seems to never take any of his success foregranted. The way he talks about almost being star struck and his admiration for other great players makes him always come across just like a kid who is going through success for the first time. It could be just words, but I never feel like it is with him. In a day and age when star athletes should hardly ever be looked up to, he is true break in the mold. [1 total replies]

I'm sure he'll be ok.. from his Scout.com page

"2008 Season
Robinson got off to a great start at Double-A Springfield, often leading the Texas League in hitting and being named to the Texas League All-Star Team in June. He played 63 games for the Springfield Cardinals hitting .352 with four home runs and 32 RBIs before being promoted to Memphis. Robinson finished the season at Triple-A, hitting just .220 in 42 games and 141 at-bats. Robinson played for the Peoria Saguaros in the Arizona Fall League at the end of the season where he appeared in 26 games and batted .280 (30-107) while leading the team in runs (27) and at-bats (107). Shane had two HRs and 24 RBI and tied for 3rd in the AFL with eight stolen bases."

So he hit .282 in A ball in 06; .253 in Palm Beach in 07; .352 in Springfield in 08; .220 in Memphis in 08; and .238 with Memphis last year and .240 in limited in STL..

That said I like the move and I wouldnt write him off since he's only been in the minors a few years.. there arent many 2Bs in our farm system currently.. [156 total replies]

Cards sign 17-year old OF Amauris Capellan from DR

[quote:3e82505761]Amauris Capellan may not be Wagner Mateo, but the 17-year-old native of the Dominican Republic is the St. Louis Cardinals’ highest-profile amateur signing this season. The club announced this past week that the outfielder inked his name on a contract that reportedly calls for a signing bonus of $450,000.

Capellan’s deal was the first indication to most outside observers that the Cardinals’ Latin American initiatives had not been dormant since last fall. On July 2nd, the first day 16-year-old foreigners are eligible to sign each year, the club announced that Mateo, a 16-year-old highly-coveted prospect, had agreed to terms on what was lined up to be a record-breaking contract.

The new signees are led by Capellan. The resident of Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic, is an outfielder like Mateo. In their internal rankings of the current signing class, the Cardinals placed Capellan among the top five hitters[/color:3e82505761]. Others include Mateo and Miguel Angel Sano, a shortstop signed by the Minnesota Twins for $3.15 million in September.

“Of all the players we have signed this year, Capellan is the one with the most upside, the guy who can provide the most impact in a short period of time,” Rodriguez said.

The stocky, 6-foot-0, 180-pound right-handed hitter drew a favorable comparison.

[b:3e82505761]“He is a strong-bodied, stocky-build Raul Mondesi-type outfielder,” Rodriguez offered, referring to the 12-year former major leaguer. “That is everybody’s favorite comparison. Similar tools… He’s got a lot of lower-half strength, but he still has some room to grow… He is aggressive and plays the game hard.”[/b:3e82505761]

While not stretching the Cardinals’ budget nearly as much as Mateo’s contract would have, Capellan’s bonus was still significant, yet was likely a better deal for the organization due to its timing.[/quote:3e82505761]

Carpenter definitely decides the outcome of the NL Central along with Pujols and Waino. Carp makes most of his starts and dominates like usual, the NL Central is most likely a lock. Should he returned to an injury-riddled season, things get interesting. [2 total replies]

Jim Edmonds Signs With Brewers

[b:d688031032]Edmonds is getting his second wind
BY RICK HUMMEL
ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH

[quote:d688031032]MARYVILLE, Ariz. — The question presented, simply, to Jim Edmonds was "Why?" His answer, not quite as simply, was, "I don't know."

Why, indeed, is the former Cardinals Gold Glove center fielder trying a comeback in the majors after sitting out the 2009 season — and at age 39? Edmonds, in the Milwaukee Brewers' camp on a non-roster look, said there were at least a couple of reasons.

Edmonds, a Cardinals star for eight seasons from 2000 to 2007, followed up with a couple of text messages to La Russa suggesting that he would accept the minimum as a bench player.

"I figured they had a spot for me," Edmonds said.

But negotiations to that end didn't get very far, as the Cardinals couldn't promise Edmonds the at-bats he wanted and they didn't really make an offer to him. Edmonds had been working out but not in baseball fashion ("I hadn't touched a ball yet,") until that January night in St. Louis.

Edmonds, who also wanted to come back to the Cardinals to be with McGwire, said, "I figured I'd be a perfect fit. But they just said they couldn't give me but 100 or so at-bats. That wasn't exactly what I was looking for. That's a big park and playing part-time there would be tough. I've heard people say that once you've played every day, it's hard to play part-time and I agree with that."

Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak, back in Jupiter, Fla., said, "It really came down to playing time. And I do think he had a lot more upside (financially) in Milwaukee than we would have been able to provide."[/quote:d688031032]

Ludwick Praises Mac for Fixing Swing; Feels Good

[b:6d98078947]Swinging McGwire's praises
Ludwick looks past steroid admission, credits 'good teacher' for fixing hitch
By DAVID ZALUBOWSKI/THE ASSOCIATED PRESS[/b:6d98078947]

[quote:6d98078947]There are still a lot of questions Mark McGwire won't answer, but none of them involves how to hit a baseball. Despite reports that the admitted former steroid user has been a distraction in his first spring training as the St. Louis Cardinals' hitting coach, McGwire already has helped outfielder Ryan Ludwick at the plate.

After breaking down video of the former Durango High School and UNLV star's previous two seasons with St. Louis, McGwire fixed a loop in Ludwick's swing.

"He kind of attacked my back side (of the swing). It got a little loopy last year," said the 31-year-old Ludwick, who batted .265 with 22 home runs and 97 RBIs in 139 games last season. "We worked on staying on top of the baseball and driving down through the ball.

"It allows you to be shorter to the ball, and from there it's just about staying in the strike zone as long as possible with the barrel of the bat head. 'Short to it, long through it,' that's kind of what he's been preaching to me."

Ludwick, who signed a $5.45 million, one-year contract in January, said he's completely healthy entering this season, his fourth with the Cards.

"Honestly, I feel better this year than I have the last four years coming into camp," he said. "My body's not sore, my knees feel great, and my hips feel good. It's the best I've felt in a while."[/quote:6d98078947]

[quote:482aca9439="FireHawke"][quote:482aca9439="rasfan28"]
I agree FireHawke, Freese has to at least get a chance even if he has a bad spring IMO. Lopez should get plenty of playing time even if he relieves 3rd, SS, and 2nd once a week. This way everyone stays fresh and everyone still gets plenty AB's.

I'm not sure that they will go with three infielders, Lugo, Greene, and Lopez on the bench. Greene and Lugo may be fighting it out. They could carry two OFer's Craig, Mather and Stavi will have to fight is out depending on how many pitchers they carry. If R. Hill doesn't work out I think Little Mac or Hawksworth will get the nod. If that happens they will almost have to go with 13 pitchers to make up for the thin bullpen. That would mean the bench would be...

LaRue
Lopez
Lugo/Greene
Two of these three Craig, Mather, Stavi[/quote:482aca9439]

Think Mather has a bit of a edge due to major league experience. Joey Bombs did hit 8 hrs in 133 ab's in '08. That should carry some weight.

The question we have to ask ourselves is, can Craig go from being an everyday player who gets 4 to 5 pa's a game to a guy who comes in late in a game to provide that pop off the bench? Favorites aside can Craig do that? I dont know if he can... FeLo's signing might help Craig in a way. Stavi has career AAAA player written all over him. IMO

Ras Why do you think the bullpen is thin? I think Hawksworth is the long man either way.. The key in my eyes is Boggs and Kinney.. Can Boggs be what Duncan thinks he can be? Can Kinney start pitching like we have seen him in the past?
Can Hill get himself straightened out to grab the 5 spot? We will see... Best case would be for Hill IMO.. That way K-Mac can slide back into setup role..[/quote:482aca9439]

FireHawke I think we're in pretty much agreement here. McClellan has been the main RH out of the pen since Franklin became closer. So if Little Mac becomes the fifth starter it puts Motte as the main guy. Hopefully he came up with a second pitch over the winter. That leaves Boggs and Kinney behind him who have been anything but consistant, therefore I think they would also carry someone else in the pen taking a guy away from the bench. That's the part that scares me a little. I'm hoping Hill works out as well. Keeping fingers crossed.

Your also right about Craig. From what I've read so far he has been working out at first as well as the OF. I'm not sure he can come off the bench and hit instead... [31 total replies]

[b:ed3c1e075b]Camp puts smile on Albert Pujols' face
By Bernie Miklasz
ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH

[quote:ed3c1e075b]JUPITER, Fla. — Albert Pujols is in a great mood these days. He's the father of a new baby son, Ezra. Wife Deidra and all four children are with him in Florida. His elbow feels better than it has in several years. And Pujols is still warm on the possibility of remaining with the Cardinals beyond 2011.

Here are the highlights of multiple conversations I had with Pujols this week; some of his comments came during his visit to my radio show on WXOS (101.1 FM).[/quote:ed3c1e075b]

[quote:ed3c1e075b]— On his contract, which is up after 2011:

"People in St. Louis and our fans around the country know where I want to be. And that's St. Louis. There's no city like St. Louis to play baseball. And the way the city has embraced me, and my family and our charitable foundation has been unbelievable. I am blessed. So why would I want to go anywhere else?

"I appreciate being a Cardinal. I appreciate wearing this uniform. I appreciate being part of the legacy over the last nine years and I want to continue to do that. I appreciate being around the Hall of Famers. I don't think there's many organizations who have that. I think we have the most (living) Hall of Famers, and they come around. You see Stan Musial, Lou Brock, Bob Gibson, Ozzie Smith, Red Schoendienst all the time. They spend time with us. You appreciate talking baseball with all of those guys. So why would I want to go anywhere?

"Do I want to do this right now and take care of this so we don't need to worry about it? Of course. If it happens, it happens. But there are some things I am able to control and there are other things that are out of my hands that I can't control. And that's the truth."[/quote:ed3c1e075b]

Glaus to Atlanta?

[i:f35a3993a0]Troy Glaus is making his move from third base to first base look easy. Now the Atlanta Braves just want to see him stay on the field from April to October.

Glaus, a third baseman most of his 11-year career, is launching a new phase of his career as a full-time first baseman. He has played only six games in his career at his new position but was signed by the Braves to replace Adam LaRoche.

The 33-year-old Glaus has looked comfortable in the field and in batting practice during the first week of spring training. But the most important positive sign is his good health.[/i:f35a3993a0] Glaus [12 total replies]

Really? I consider myself relatively knowledgeable on the Cardinals minor league system and i've honestly never heard of the guy. If he has yet to face batters as a pro, then that's probably why though.

Either way, hate to see a promising young player, let alone a Cardinal farm hand, go down. Anytime the words 'shoulder,' 'surgerey,' and 'Mark Mulder' are thrown together in connection with a pitcher, you have to cringe. [2 total replies]

P.J. Walters newborn fighting for life; improving now

[quote:4e539f5396]JUPITER, Fla. – Pitcher P.J. Walters was able to leave his wife and daughter in Mobile, Alabama, and report to Cardinals camp on Monday after receiving positive news on 12-day-old Annabel Faith’s health.

A C-section was performed on Walters’ wife Brittney on Feb 10 after a routine ultrasound test showed a problem with their daughter’s heart. Annabel was born almost 14 weeks ahead of schedule and weighed just 3.6 pounds at birth.

“They didn’t give her much of a chance but she’s still going,” Walters said. “She’s going to be there awhile. They said even if she was healthy, she has to stay in there until her due date, which was the middle of May. So she’s there for awhile. The first few nights were up and down, real good to real bad. Now she has been pretty stable the last few days.

“I’m not a doctor, I can sit by her bed and hold her hand all night but there’s only so much I can do. Fresh air is probably good for me. I’m still only a phone call away. There are still going to be good days and bad days.”

Walters said he played catch in the hospital parking lot with his dad to try and keep his arm in shape. While his daughter remains in the hospital for at least another month and a half, Walters will join his teammates on the field for workouts beginning on Tuesday.

“I’m still thinking about her, I’m not going to forget about what’s going on,” Walters said. “But at the same time, I’m here to do my job and help this team win. The team has been very supportive. Anyway they could have helped, they would have and they did. I am very, very appreciative.”[/quote:4e539f5396]

Nah, they got Eli Marrero out of it.

It really was one of the most lopsided trades in recent history. Unfortunately, it didn't involve one of the coasts, so it doesn't get the press coverage.
