Switch pitchers are very rare but also pretty worthless on the MLB level. It's too hard for a player to excel at a high level when he can't put all his effort into developing one thing.
They are very unique, but that is all. They are never successful at high levels of competition. It is really cool to watch though!

so do those pitchers have to change gloves when he is pitching to a lefty then a righty comes to the plate.

They have a special type of glove that can switch easily.

They have custom made gloves with 3 fingers and two thumbs, that way they can switch it to either hand. They can't switch during a batter but they can switch from one batter to the next, but they have to declare before the first pitch which way they will throw.

I'm 27 yrs old and am a baseball nut......but I have NEVER heard of a switch pitcher......I take it you guys aren't joking about this? That's crazy.

Without knowing anything about switch pitchers, I would agree with Hase22 that they wouldn't be very successful in the Majors maybe even in AA or AAA.

I know this is alittle off subject, but:

Did a little research on the Switch Pitcher thing. There have been 4 Major Leaguers throw with both hand. But only 1 in the modern era, Greg Harris. The others were in the 1800's. And I think only 1 in the Minor leagues. Harris really only used it one time when he was with the Expos against the Reds. He pitched to 4 batters in an inning 3 right handed and 1 left handed (walked the lefty batter).

Here's the special glove

Kind of interesting.

Panther's Mark Shorey Selected to All-American Team
Senior becomes HPU's first Division I honoree

The record-setting season for High Point University outfielder Mark Shorey added another highlight on Friday when he was named to the Louisville Slugger All-American third team by Collegiate Baseball.

Shorey, a native of Peabody, Mass., was named the Big South Conference Co-MVP after guiding the Panthers to their best overall and conference records (27-32, 14-10) in the program’s seven-year NCAA Division I history. He led the league with 20 home runs and also topped the Big South in both slugging percentage (.779) and on-base percentage (.504). Shorey also finished second in the conference with a .408 batting average and fourth in RBI with 62.

A first-team All-Big South performer this season, Shorey posted Top Five season totals in nearly every statistical category in the HPU record books. His 87 hits marked a single season record and he finished with the second best season totals for RBI, homers, doubles (19) and slugging percentage. Shorey’s batting average was the fifth best single year performance at High Point and he also posted the third highest season on-base percentage. A relief pitcher early in his career at HPU, Shorey also leaves with the second most career saves (11) as a Panther.

my fave switch pitcher of all time is tony mullane (born in Ireland). he played in the 1800's. The coolest thing about him is he played without a glove so that he could switch arms at any moment and surprise batters. pretty awesome. obviously, these days, regulations prevent that. but i was thinking, if there was enough info about his personal life, it'd make an awesome movie.
