anyone notice that the Brewers extended this guy for 8 years for around $46 million? What a bargain. He gets lifetime security, but if he continues to hit like he has, the Brewers got him for half of what he could have gotten as a free agent.

Hope they took out insurance on this contract. I think Braun is an awesome player, but to stay healthy for those 8 years is tough in the MLB these days. Good luck Ryan!

While there is definitely some risk involved with a long term contract of this nature I believe you'll see this become a huge trend with small to mid-market teams in the future. This example coupled with Tulowitzki's extension in COL allows teams to secure players at a reasonable price for a few more years beyond their expected arrival at free agency. Time has shown that smaller teams usually lose out once players hit free agency so this is a way to help offset that trend.

Actually this is one of the reasons that the Braves were successful for such a long time. They were signing alot of their younger offensive talent at early stages in their career and locking them in with what would be considered "cheap" contracts.

If you can get a player to do it, its a smart move. I would however try very hard to never try and lock in a pitcher.

I completely agree with you regarding pitchers. This strategy will most likely not be taken with many pitchers. The prospect of signing a pitcher to a contract for more than 3-4 years seems to get worse with each year that passes. I promise you right now that the contract which Sabathia signs will probably be regretted by the team who signs him.

Another thing I find interesting about the Braun signing is the fact that Fielder has not done something similar already. However the answer is most likely behind the fact that Fielder's agent is Scott Boras (who, by the way, does not represent Tulowitzki or Braun).

I do not like this for pitchers as well. With position players I think it is a great deal usually for both the player and the team. For the team, they lock in talent for a few more years than they normally would. And for the player the first $10 million to me is so much more important than any additional money the player may receive in free agency. If I was a player I would want to try to do this as soon as I could for fear of blowing out my knee.

braun could have gotten alot more money, if i were him i'd fire my agent. if braun keeps playing at the level he's playing, he definitely deserves more money then the people that are getting the money and not producing results ::cough:: barry zito ::cough::

I thought this article was very appropriate given the subject of this thread.

Identifying more young players who could cash in

Jayson Stark of espn.com wrote:
As best we can tell, no up-and-coming 23-year-old star has signed a seven-year contract in the past 12 minutes.

But you'd better check the old transactions column to make sure of that -- because at this rate, every young player in baseball, with the possible exception of Jeff Fiorentino, will be signed for life by the end of the week.

Oh, all right. Not all of them. Hard as it may be to believe this -- in a week when Ryan Braun, Hanley Ramirez, Joakim Soria and Scott Kazmir signed deals guaranteeing them more than $155 million combined -- long-term contracts are not for everybody.
