BASEBALL AMERICA GRADES THE CARDINALS' 2005 DRAFT:
courtsy of baseball america
Nick Stavinoha is the best posistion player the cardinals drafted in 2005 according to baseball america(AP)
Best Pro Debut: OF Nick Stavinoha (7) immediately became one of the most feared hitters in the low Class A Midwest League, batting .344average -14 home runs-53 rbi's.
Best Athlete:OF Daryl Jones (3) had NCAA Division I-A football offers as a wide receiver, and he was thought to be a tough sign because he committed to Rice. But St. Louis got him for $450,000, the equivalent of second-round money. OF Colby Rasmus (1) isn't as fast as Jones, but he's a better hitter and another five-tool center fielder. And SS Tyler Greene (1) is a five-tool shortstop.
Best Fastball: RHP Mark McCormick (1) hit 98 mph during the spring and pitched at 91-96 mph through instructional league. RHP Nick Webber (2) has a 91-94 mph fastball that's more notable for its sink than its velocity. One scout compared its movement to a Wiffle ball's. RHPs Tyler Herron (1), Josh Wilson (2), Mitch Boggs (5), Jason Cairns (0 and Kenny Maiques (37) all have touched 94.

I just noticed that the Peoria Chiefs' home opener is April 13 against our very own Swing of the Quad Cities. Anyone else going to be taking in any of that weekend set with Peoria?
It broke my heart when, just after beautiful O'Brien Field had been built, they switched back to a Cubs organization. Oh well, at least I can still be there to watch the Swing when they come into town. _________________ "Get up! Get up, ball!" |

Q-C’s Meacham adjusts to starting role
By Steve Batterson | Comments(0)
When Cory Meacham walked off the mound at John O’Donnell Stadium for the final time last fall, he left in a relief role.
The Swing of the Quad-Cities put the ball in Meacham’s hand to open the 2006 season.
The 21-year-old right-hander takes the mound today for the 4 p.m. Midwest League opener at Kane County, which will counter with 6-foot-7 right-hander Trey Shields.
“I was a little surprised to get this start, but I’ve had a decent spring,’’ Meacham said. “I’ve been pretty consistent and have been making adjustments well.’’

Myself, my fiance, and a friend of ours will be making the 40 minute drive down I-74 to see the Peoria Chiefs home opener against the Swing. If anyone's going, give me a holler!
I'm pumped to see Rasmus. Hopefully he performs better than he did ^ up there against Kane County. _________________ "Get up! Get up, ball!" |

McCORMICK POWERS SWING TO FIRST VICTORY
Quad Cities pitchers combine for shutout win; McCormick fans seven in six innings of work
The Swing of the Quad Cities captured their first victory of the 2006 season on Saturday afternoon at Elfstrom Stadium, shutting out the Kane County Cougars, 4-0. Starting pitcher Mark McCormick established the tempo early, striking out four in a row at one point, as the Cougars could only muster two hits all game long.
With the win Quad Cities improves to 1-2, while Kane County drops to 2-1.
After walking leadoff hitter Mike Massaro to start the game, McCormick (1-0) found his groove. Catcher Bryan Anderson, making his first start of the season at only 19 years old, cut down Massaro trying to steal second, and McCormick promptly struck out the next two batters to retire the side. After inducing a groundout to open the second inning, the hard-throwing righthander out of Baylor reeled off four straight punchouts to give him six total through three innings.

McCormick leads Swing to 1st win of 2006
GENEVA, Ill. — Kane County couldn’t catch up with Swing of the Quad-Cities right-hander Mark McCormick on Saturday.
McCormick allowed one hit over six innings while combining with three relievers for a 4-0, two-hit Midwest League victory over the Cougars.
The Swing collected the only run they needed to earn their first win in three games during a hitless third inning that opened with back-to-back walks to Bryan Anderson and Charles Carter.
A fielding error by Kane County pitcher Jeffrey Gray on a sacrifice attempt by Calvin Hayes loaded the bases before Anderson scored when Daniel Nelson grounded into a double play.
