|
|
According to the fairly reputable blog Viva El Birdos, there is talk about the Phillies moving Bobby Abreu to the Cards for Jason Marquis and Anthony Reyes. (This is a big enough rumor to warrent its own thread, before any snide remarks get made.)
Thoughts? I'd hate losing Reyes. We'd have to sign another pitcher, hopefully Burnett. But Abreu in the 2 hole in front of Pujols looks very nice. How much salary would Philly pay?
EDIT: ElBirdo (our poster, not the site) and Ruly say it's also up at mlbtraderumors.com, but I can't get that to come up at the moment. _________________ C70 at the Bat, updated 7/17

I'll just throw out what I had in the Rumor Thread..
OF Bobby Abreu to St. Louis Cardinals | SP Jason Marquis and SP Anthony Reyes to Philadelphia Phillies
|
Nov. 29 - I've been hearing this and cant really say who I've heard it from (just so you know, it didnt come from NorthSideBaseball.com). While I would like to see a player like Bobby Abreu coming to the Cardinals (He's on the trade block btw!) and Jason Marquis shipped off. I'm not sure losing Anthony Reyes will be worth it. Actually it probably could be. Anthony hasnt proven a whole lot yet and has been injury prone his career so far. Walt has traded prospects in the past and I think he would with Reyes to acquire a player like Bobby. I think this has some substance.. I suppose that if you lose Reyes and Marquis.. We'd be stuck with Carpenter, Mulder, Suppan, ??? (Burnett?), and Wainwright in the rotation.. I could live with that..
(This didnt even come from Viva El Birdos either... I dont know how reliable it is either but I've heard some rumblings aswell!) |

| Abreu would be a great pickup. If he can be had, then he is the best prize on the market this offseason IMO. Also, in that link you posted it says Nunez signed with the Phillies. I wish him the best of luck. |

| good questions C.. I don't like losing Reyes either.. I think he has the talent to do big things.. I don't think another pitcher would do.. I would want a Young Cheap pitcher with talent (AKA Reyes).. We can't keep adding payroll we are going to end up in a heap of trouble.. We need to keep some young talented players around and we don't have that many in our system! |

Wouldn't the Cardinals need two starting pitchers then? Or is Wainright given the last role, and a FA signed?
I think that might be a little steep of a price to pay, and Abreu is a horrible fielder, but quite a nice bat. He did tail down a lot after the break last season though, but that was probably just a fluke. He's fast, gets on base, and normally hit's for a nice amount of power (I didn't look up his home away splits, so if someone could post those I'd be grateful).
I don't think I do this trade, I'd do Marquis/Wainright/Lambert for Abreu though, and if needed gabe johnson or yarbough . _________________ sabermetromaniac |

I'd love Abreu, but forget that. I love Reyes, I don't want to lose him. Then we will have 2 holes in the rotation, and I'm guessing one of them would be filled by Burnett if we can still afford him.
Balk, how the heck did Abreu win a GG if he's a horrible fielder? _________________ http://futureredbirds.com

| I'm buying into the hype for Reyes too but let's be honest here. He's been injury prone, we dont know what he's gonna be able to do for a full year.. Granted the dude could be a CY YOUNG winner in the future but he's still a question mark.. |

Because the people who pick it are tards apparantly. It's widely known by scouts and stat heads hes lousy in the field. _________________ sabermetromaniac

Abreu is great, and I'd love to have him, but I'm not sure if he's worth two SPs-especially if we don't sign any of the free agent SPs. _________________ "Any fool can make things bigger, more complex, and more violent. Yeah, you are right. I mean Jeter won a GG, too. It's a popularity contest, mostly. _________________ http://futureredbirds.com |

I just read a Philly fan's impression of Abreu's difference was that it wasn't GG, but it was tolerable. I doubt he's Manny Ramirez out there, and if we keep to the ground ball type pitching, that would be less of an issue.
Is Reyes Steve Carlton or Bud Smith? Lots of us didn't care that Bud was in the Rolen deal, and that seems to have worked out. But I don't think Bud had the upside that Reyes does. _________________ C70 at the Bat, updated 7/17

The money involved would be the most important thing here. Abreu made over $13 mil last year. Why not just sign Giles and keep our pitchers? It would be cheaper. _________________ A Zizzer-zazzer-zuzz |
