So I was wondering about this as I was watching my beloved New England Patriots manhandle (and shut out) the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Do you like watching the defense play more than the offense? What about baseball - do you prefer watching your team score a multitude of runs or a fantastic pitching performance? It seems like the commish's of each sport believe that fans prefer offense, but so many of the fans I talk to prefer the defensive aspects.

So for each sport (baseball and football) do you prefer offense or defense?

Me: defense in football and defense/pitching in baseball.

I'd like to see my team playing well on offense and defense/pitching during a game. For football, I'd rather see a shootout than a low-scoring game. For baseball, I think I'd take a pitcher's duel over a slug fest, although I like to see some of each from time to time.

Offense is so much more fun to watch. Think about it...do most people go to see a 1-0 (baseball), 7-0 (football) or 47-46 (basketball) game? Not me. I like to see high scoring games. Give me a 10-9 (baseball), 56-45 (football) or 100-99 (basketball) game any day. It's where all the action is. Laughing

I love seeing a well played game. I would rather see a close low scoring game, unless it's Cardinals than I'd rather see a 10-0 Cards win. Although that 1-0 10 inning game on April 23rd was the most exciting game I ever saw live.

Defense. I always have to go with defense. It's the whole in your face, not going to happen on my watch mentality.

Baseball -- While HRs and offensive power are great, a pitcher completely shutting down an offensive threat is just awe inspiring. And a great defensive fielder just stealing a dinger or a line drive away is heart stoppingly good baseball. I love it!

Football -- Ahh, defense in football is really where it's at. It's so intense! The fire in their eyes is awesome.

I'm completely in balance when it comes to offense and defense in baseball and football.

In baseball I'm leaning towards defense because each single player of the team can win the game and offense doesn't necesarilly win the game, you always need defense to shut the other team down. The Pitcher can throw a no hitter, an outfielder may go over the fence and catch that critical ball and prefend the opposing team from tying the game and the catcher may block the path to the homeplate to prefend the baserunner from scoring.

Being an ex-football player myself (former Center and Right Tackle) I'm leaning towards the offense because nothing feels better than being an integral part of the winning touchdown in a game. The defense keeps you in the game and the offense finishes it IMO but that's just me.

Intriguing question.

In baseball I enjoy defense more. I'd much rather have a team full of gold glovers than a team of sluggers. Defensive gems are all different and exciting, whereas most homeruns look just like all the rest, other than location. That said, some nice small ball, moving runners from base to base, is very compelling (more suspenseful).

In football, I'm more of an offense fan. I get way too nervous when my team is on defense because I think they should be stopping every single play and it's way too easy to get frustrated. But I love watching fantastic offensive sequences that make it look like beautiful choreography.

Offense isn't just done by sluggers.

I'd rather have a well rounded offense that has a good balance of contact hitters and a couple sluggers with a great defense.

If either is done extremely well, they both are great to watch. It's almost like asking which kid do you like the best...or better yet, which kid makes the family more 'whole'.

Offense isn't just done by sluggers'.

Nor is defense demonstrated only by players who have won gold gloves. Smile If the question was about balance or creating the best overall team I'd definitely diversify, but since it was about extremes I'm going with the type of player who creates the most runs - high OBP, high SLG - as the example.

Defense rules in baseball. Nothing beats an Ozze Smith-like catch, not even a 500-foot Albert Pujols homerun.

Football and basketball are different, however. A 360 reverse windmill slam dunk by Lebron James is a heck of a lot better on the eyes than a Lebron James steal.

Football is the same way. Except in the case of Nathan Vasher, offense is a lot more exciting than defense. Nothing is cooler to watch than a 90-yard TD run, or a 75-yard receiving TD.

I think offense and defense are different in baseball and football versus basketball and hockey.

In football and baseball, the teams set-up defensively. In basketball and hockey, defense transitions from offense and vice-versa.
