I wonder who would be the odd man out in the rotation when he returns? Or will he come back in the Sept call up and Cards go with a 6 man rotation for the final five week stretch without any off days? _________________

I like the idea of a 6 man rotation. With some of the things TLR has pulled to get the team going this year I wouldn't think it'd be out of the question. Of course if any pitcher has really fallen behind the rest of the staff I think you need to give Mulder a shot over him. Same can be said that if we have Wano or JP pitching lights out, in a pennant race we need him out there every 5th day.
I'd bump Looper out first IMO. The IP are rising & it's obviously taking a toll on him, VERY inconsistent the last month or so it seems like, one good start, one bad etc. Not to mention he'd have the smoothest transition to the bullpen & be the biggest asset coming out of it (besides Wainwright but that will never happen). _________________

If current perfs continue I'm on the Looper first bandwagon too, although Reyes can be so inconsistent. Although, I think Mulder does only BP duty for awhile. If we're winnin' & in the hunt he may not start in 07. |

Mulder sharp in start
By Derrick Goold
ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH
08/22/2007
Mark Mulder, climbing his way back to the major-league rotation, did not allow an earned run in four innings Tuesday night for the Cardinals' High-A affiliate.
Making the second start of his rehab assignment, Mulder struck out three, walked none and threw 48 pitches at Vero Beach, Fla.
The lefty, who had surgery in September to repair a tear in his rotator cuff, got 12 outs from 15 batters, and the only run to score on him did so after his fielding error.
Tampa Bay center fielder Rocco Baldelli, also working his way back from injury, went 0 for two against Mulder.
The Cardinals have not set a day for his return to the majors, though they expect him in early September.
If he recovers well from this start, which dropped his rehab earned-run average to 1.69, he'll throw again Sunday, possibly at a higher level. |

I'm actually expecting him to get roughed up as he goes up through the ranks. Since he's just now getting back into pitching after a year off and these guys are in the middle/end of a season, I'd expect the hitters to tee-off on him a little bit. I'm just more concerned with his velocity and if he's throwing strikes.
No matter what though, I can't see him being a big contributor this season. _________________ You see, you spend a good piece of your life gripping a baseball, and in the end it turns out that it was the other way around all the time. ~Jim Bouton, Ball Four, 1970 |

Rehab matchup: Mulder vs. Pedro Martinez
By Derrick Goold
ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH
08/24/2007
Lefthanded starter Mark Mulder is scheduled to make two more rehab starts before the end of the month and, according to pitching coach Dave Duncan, could join the starting rotation in the first week of September.
Mulder will start Sunday for High-A Palm Beach — opposite New York Mets starter Pedro Martinez, who also is on a rehab assignment.
Barring difficulty, Mulder's next start will be Aug. 31 at Class AAA Memphis. He'll join the big-league team when roster expands Sept. 1.
Duncan said Mulder's repaired rotator cuff "is not an issue. Has not been an issue at all. ... Everything as a whole has been better. His delivery, consistency, endurance. Everything is improving each time."
Mulder's imminent arrival coupled with September's packed schedule has manager Tony La Russa considering many permutations as he maps out his starting rotation for the stretch run. One is a six-man rotation.

If stay w/5-man I'm movin' towards straight to rotation for Anthony now. |

If we are in the hunt in Sept. I think that Dave and Tony will throw Mark in the rotation right away. Tony has showed in years past that he goes with the players that he has a track record with. Maybe it is a trust thing with the guys that have been around the block with the team.
Guess we will have to wait and see. |

mulder will be in the rotation the second he comes up. he's a veteran player (which tony drools over) and the only lefty starter we'd have available.
i'm willing to guess anthony reyes would be the odd man out too and will end up doing long relief if needed in the pen. _________________ 2011, Year of the Cardinals!!!! |

No way. Looper would be a very valuable addition to the bullpen, not to mention that Anthony Reyes has been pitching great his last few games. _________________ WPS |

I don't expect to see much from Mulder once he does return, but the woes the Cards pitching staff has had this year, Mulder might turn out to be a big surprise. _________________
