Just a reminder: Until his injury he was the Winningest pitcher in baseball this decade.
When Carp comes back I hope nobody's ready to throw him under the bus if he has a ruff first start. |

I was interested tonight in the observations of neutral and unemotional observers.
Scouts from other organizations.
Talked to two.
One whom I trust completely.
Verdict from them?
Surprised that Mulder had such good velocity, early. Thought he was ahead of where they'd assumed he'd be after extensive shoulder surgery. Thought his arm angle (elevation) was good.
Completely expected him to lose mph, because he's still building arm strength back. Not surprised by his lack of command; of course he isn't going to be sharp so soon. They think he should be poised to reemerge as a top-of-rotation guy next season, after he has a normal offseason of training and throwing. That wasn't the case this past winter.
This wasn't a disaster. People (some) are freaking out. Bottom-line results were bad, so the noise is understandable. But the way he threw early in first time back - encouraging. Big picture? He's healthy again. His arm motion is nice and easy. Bodes well for 2008.
But ...
Question: this is basically spring training for Mulder. Can the Cardinals afford to give him a spring training in September when every game is so important? One more start? Two? That's why TLR is paid so much to be the boss. To make these tough calls.

Excellent points from Bernie. Thanks for posting madcowboy.
And I agree, I wouldn't want to be in TLR's shoes right now. _________________ You see, you spend a good piece of your life gripping a baseball, and in the end it turns out that it was the other way around all the time. ~Jim Bouton, Ball Four, 1970 |

What's ironic about how fickle we sports fans are is IMO if we were 9-10 games back we'd probably be LESS critical of TLR & there'd be much less scrutiny. But because we've scratched & clawed thru all the problems this year & are within reach of the just-.500+ Cubs & Brewers we're gonna micro-analyze his every move & criticize anything that doesn't produce positive results. Ain't fandom great? |

Or Mulder's. I am afraid he will overpitch or something giving the circumstances. The Pirates are not the best team to test a comeback either. Yes, I said that. Because I read somewhere that the Pirates have had one of the best offensive numbers in the majors since August.
I just hope TLR sticks with the 6-man rotation for the time being because I would rather him start at Cincy rather than that crucial one game makeup at Wrigley on MOnday. _________________

Here's what I don't get: W/ the original 5-man schedule Waino would've been the starter @ Wrigley Monday, right? I think ya GOTTA start one of your most productive guys Mon w/anywhere near normal rest. I'm sure you read the articles about Peavey askin' to pitch on 3 days rest so he could pitch against Az.
We'll see. Posted article yesterday indicate TLR's re-thinkin' the 6-man idea. |

Mulder pitched Wednesday- 5 days later is Monday.
With the current rotation going 6-man it seems Piniero would get the Start Monday and Mulder Tuesday. _________________

Mulder set for Tuesday
By Derrick Goold
ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH
09/07/2007
Cardinals lefty Mark Mulder felt the expected soreness in his left shoulder as he continues to strengthen and condition muscles important to his refined delivery. As part of the Cardinals' six-man rotation, Mulder had Thursday off to receive treatment for his surgically repaired left shoulder and today will begin preparing normally for his next start. He is scheduled to start Tuesday in Cincinnati, according to manager Tony La Russa.
"It's just muscle soreness, more so because of the adrenaline and everything like that," said Mulder, who pitched four innings and allowed six runs (all earned) Wednesday in his first start in more than a year.
Mulder, who had rotator-cuff surgery last Sept. 12, said his arm slot was higher Wednesday than it had been in any of his four rehab starts. "My arm angle is getting higher and higher, and you have to build (the muscles) in that spot up," he said. "It was higher (Wednesday) than it's been, and maybe it fatigued quicker because of that ... I don't know if I got tired or got out of whack. I'm just going to make the next start last longer."

| OK. The Cards are pretty much out of the race. Yeah, they're still within striking distance, but, realistically, they're done. So, why even put Mulder on the mound right now? I say just DL him for the rest of the year. Let him do bullpen sessions for the rest of the season and rehab his arm completely this off season. No reason to let him do further damage to it. Besides, he's pitching like a chump now anyway. Put him on the shelf! |
