Edmonds groin injury, Percival ponders future

Edmonds slowed by groin injury
By Derrick Goold
ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH

Cardinals center fielder Jim Edmonds left Monday’s game and was unavailable for Tuesday’s game after aggravating a groin injury. Edmonds said he planned to limit his work Tuesday to avoid antagonizing the ache that he has felt for several days. "It’s something I’ve been dealing with," Edmonds said, "and it just got too sore to play." A lefty, Cole Hamels, starting for the Phillies made taking Tuesday night off obvious and Edmonds does not believe the injury will keep him out of the lineup for long.

Percival ponders the future
By Derrick Goold

Having proved his elbow still has innings left in it, Troy Percival is interested in pitching next season — and is thinking about following the half-season schedule he used this year. The former All-Star closer said he thinks a half-year role, especially in middle relief, would be attractive next summer. "It depends on what jobs are open, really," Percival said. "I’ve got enough saves and I think a half-season back here would be ideal. As long as I feel productive — productive and useful — then I’d like to keep going. And I’ve felt that way here."

Percival, 38, has a 2.06 ERA in 29 appearances for the Cardinals. He has served in a variety of roles. He said it would probably take a closer or setup job for a West Coast team to sell him on pitching a full season next summer. "We’ll see what’s out there," he said.

Doesn't seem like he cares much to come back to STL next season... He's solid, but I don't know why he plans going Roger Clemens on everyone.

If we lose Percival, that is going to be a huge blow to the bullpen next season!

I'd love for Percival to come back, although he does deserve a shot at closing.

Edmonds is hurt again... it's kinda getting to the point that the Cardinals are gonna be getting a group discount from the hospital.

For those who say Percival will be a huge blow to the bullpen, I'd hold back from pushing the eject button for a minute. Percy, IMO, is taking up Josh Kinney's spot in the bullpen. If Kinney comes back healthy AND if we are able to re-sign Springer, then I don't think our bullpen will be too much in shambles.

I'd like Percy to come back, it was exciting to watch him make his comeback in STL. I want him to have another chance on seeing the REAL Cardinals team next year. But, if it doesn't work out to retain him for '08, we are fortunate enough to have decent options.

There is no timetable for center fielder Jim Edmonds, out with a groin injury.

Notes: Edmonds may be done for '07
Outfielder has tests on injured legs, unsure of possible return
By Daniel Berk / MLB.com

ST.LOUIS -- Jim Edmonds wasn't in the Cardinals lineup on Friday night, and may not be there for the rest of the season, as he continues to battle groin issues in both of his legs.

Edmonds underwent an MRI on Thursday and saw two different doctors to seek opinions on his current injury. He was planning on talking to the team physician, Dr. George Paletta, after Friday's game to determine his availability for the rest of the season and go over the test results.

Edmonds did, however, acknowledge that his season could be over. He said that if Paletta said that it could be harmful to keep playing, he would likely shut it down.

I can't wait for him to announce that his career is over. He really needs to retire. Thanks for the memories, but that Jim Edmonds look-a-like roaming around Busch Stadium these days is pretty sorry.

Injury update on Edmonds, Pujols and Branyan
By Rick Hummel
ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH
09/22/2007

Center fielder Jim Edmonds, examined Friday by a specialist concerning his groin strain, may not play much the rest of the season. Trainer Barry Weinberg said that Edmonds playing was a questionable proposition and Edmonds said, "Obviously, there is a difference between smart and dumb. But there is also being respectful to your teammates."

Edmonds did pinch hit on Friday when he grounded out in the eighth inning, although he did not play in the field.

He might not do much more than that, as Edmonds said, "My plan is to go home and get in the best shape I can and not just say that this time.

"I don't want to have another surgery."

Last offseason, Edmonds had toe and shoulder surgeries. Asked if his body could take much more, Edmonds, 37, responded, "Maybe about 12 more months, if that."

Of course well all hate to see any of our favorite players think about retirement, but Jim's had a memorable career, a career that most can only dream about. There's no sense in him disrupting the rest of his life for perhaps one more year of the playing the game he loves so dearly. So seriously Jim, you need to think about passing the tourch onto someone else.

Edmonds playing a corner?
By Derrick Goold
ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH
09/25/2007

Jim Edmonds, slowed by groin soreness, shagged fly balls in the field and ran more than he has in days, but was not cleared as a late addition to the lineup. Trainer Barry Weinberg said a sports hernia has been ruled out for Edmonds, which lets him continue to work for a start. That next start, Tony La Russa said, could be in an outfield corners. "If that is a way to keep him healthier," La Russa said. "That will be one thought."

Edmonds has said the only real rest he would get for his injuries would be at first base.

Tony La Russa confirmed Tuesday that the bullpen is shorthanded because of workload and soreness. Reliever Russ Springer has had muscle spasms in his shoulder and Troy Percival has had discomfort in his right elbow.

Memo to Jocketty: The Percival story is nice, but buyer beware! Please don't invest a lot of money in bringing him back.

Yeah, you have to let Troy Percival go. He's done good, but he's nothing to fall in love with. Unless he's willing to take the veteran minimum next season.
