Pineiro agrees to deal with Cardinals
By Joe Strauss
ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH
10/15/2007

The Cardinals continued to complete their pre-free agency checklist Monday by agreeing to terms with starting pitcher Joel Pineiro on a two-year contract, pending completion of a physical, club and industry sources confirmed.

Pineiro becomes the third potential free agent retained by the club since John Mozeliak was named interim replacement for ousted general manager Walt Jocketty.

Pineiro’s signing places him alongside Adam Wainwright and Braden Looper in next April’s rotation, with lefthander Mark Mulder an expected arrival by no later than early May. The club has made the acquisition of a front-line starting pitcher its offseason priority.

I'm really pumped about Pineiro returning. He was very good down-the-stretch. Great!

I like this move. I was really expecting Pineiro to test the market, but maybe Mozeliak isn't a bad option at GM after all. Glad to have Joel back.

Terms of the pending deal were not disclosed as Pineiro traveled to St. Louis to undergo the physical; however, the contract’s annual average value is expected to exceed the one-year $4 million contract he signed with the Boston Red Sox last winter.

Hopefully not by too much, but a good signing nonetheless.

You always gotta be pumped when you sign a guy to a two year deal who was just DFA'd midseason.

Really though, he did not pitch that bad in his time here, so it could work out.

Whether it was Moz or not, I think those are 3 moves (Izzy, Springer, Joel) Jocketty would have done and what the team had planned out.. he just went along with it.. I actually like Joel and what he can bring.. Im guessing 6-7 mil a year or around there and his 2nd will be higher (obviously)? Sounds high but the ceiling is there for him.. Not like they werent interested in him one year ago either.. they were I believe.. seriously no Kip Wells and another 2 years of Joel is fine with me.. if they go acquire a front line starter (not sure who but ya get my point)

I like it in as much as they are signing a *known* entity rather than a pitcher who has never worked with any of the Cards staff. It seems fairly obvious he was able to fit in well. Someone else released him for sucking, then he came here and found his groove.

The only bad game I can really remember him having happened to be the one I was at in DC when he gave up 5 runs in 4 innings to the NATs(all in the 3rd inning I believe, he came out and looked great again in the 4th). It was his first start with the Cards. Then they sent Maroth in to relieve and he promptly gave up 5 more runs =\

Eh, not bad. Should be league average with a chance at performing above average in the NL. Should some good flashes late in the year. Hopefully he can continue. And really anything under $6 million per year with only a 2 year commitment will be a good deal for a decent starter this offseason.

Now we have:
1. Waino
2. ????
3. Looper
4. Pinero (you can flip looper and him)
5. Mulder/Reyes/Franklin/????

Just need a solid number 2 starter (big IF there) and that rotation should at least keep the Cardinals alive in the pathetic Central division.

I'm guessing they're going to pay Joel around $13MM over the 2 years. While it's not exactly the most exciting player signing in the world I believe the Cardinals had to lock him up for their pitching rotation. I had assumed he'd be in the rotation next year, now the Cardinals just need to figure out who fills out those other two spots. The pickings are slim but I'm hoping they go with the likes of Silva or Fogg and acquire one possibly through trade (e.g. Garland).

I know he's a "solid" option right now, but I am not impressed at all with Looper. I really hope he is traded in the offseason.

Being a bit harsh Ocho?....Looper will more than likely be in the rotation next season....he didn't do badly in his first year as a starter. I'd expect him to improve this coming year.

We'll see what comes down but I'd retain Looper and get at least one more solid starter (if possible) via trade....

We're keeping a lot of parts from a team that wasn't that good.

If the numbers are good, Pineiro's signing isn't bad. I just hope they didn't go crazy trying to resign him.

Saw there was a mention about Josh Fogg. With the way the postseason is going, I'm guessing the Rox will try and hold on to Fogg. I'm crossing my fingers for John Garland. Time will tell.

At least we are keeping all of the good parts. You don't see a Wells resigning in the works do you? Wink

I think this is a good signing and Pineiro should fill in a good hole in the rotation given that we have many of them. What it is really going to take for this past season's not so good team to get good is the health of Rolen and Edmonds more than filling in the rotation.

And there are mentions of Fogg possibly being a solution. I like to see it this way- Pineiro and Fogg are similar, IMO. We get the better deal in Pineiro since while he is a bit of a question, he did provide down the stretch. And it looks like Fogg's postseason run will just up his asking price.

While Pineiros is solid hes no front line pitcher..nice for the 4 hole thought. Dewitt open up your wallet..youve blown the same smoke up our rear-ends for 5 years! deliver on your "promise" you made to the loyal fans.
