From Derrick Goold via Twitter.
Ho hum, he's coming off surgery that cost him all of last year and he wasn't all that good beforehand. I assume he'll be back with St. Louis about mid ST. _________________

An amazing start to the day. Not only do the Cardinals get rid of Parisi, but he goes to the Cubs. Dont the Cubs have to keep him on the MLB roster all year or lose him? I always forget how that Rule 5 rule actually works. _________________ "Who is Karim Garcia?"

Sort of.

| To prevent teams from drafting players willy-nilly, each Rule 5 pick must be kept in the major leagues the entire following season or be offered back to his former team for half of the $50,000 selection price. |
If the players previous team doesn't want him back, then the new team can send him down. So, in that instance, they wouldn't actually lose him.

Cardinals pick up left-handed pitcher Ben Jukich from the Reds. Overall a slight net gain for the Cardinals after losing Parisi.

It's unlikely Jukich would stick on the roster all year unless Miller or Reyes has a season-long injury. I thought any third lefty in the bullpen for long relief/spot starts might be Garcia. Maybe they can trade Jukich to a team who can bury him on their roster, though, like the Padres. _________________ Sometimes the Best Trades are the Ones You Don't Make |

The St. Louis Cardinals selected left-handed pitcher Ben Jukich from the Cincinnati Reds with the 24th pick of the Major League 2009 Rule V Draft. Jukich was 9-6 with a 4.10 ERA in 17 starts for the Reds AAA Louisville club in 2009.
Jukich is 6′4, 190. He appeared in 29 games, threw 123 innings and struck out 106 batters. The Cardinals will be the third organization Jukich will have pitched for as he was originally drafted by the Oakland Athletics in the 13th round (398th overall) of the 2006 first-year player draft out of Daktoa Wesleyan University.
So here is how the Rule V (as in five) draft works. Teams draft unprotected players off other teams’ rosters and pay $50,000 for each player. If the player stays on the Major League roster for the entire season, the drafting team can keep him. If he is sent down to the minors, he must be offered back to the original team, for half of the purchased amount ($25,000).

The St. Louis Cardinals selected pitcher Ben Jukich with the 16th pick in the major league phase of the Rule 5 draft today.
Jukich, a 2001 Duluth Denfeld High School graduate currently playing baseball in a Dominican Republic winter league, spent the 2009 season with the Louisville Bats, the Class AAA affiliate of the Cincinnati Reds.
Jukich, 27, said he spoke with the Cardinals today and is awaiting word on their immediate winter baseball plans for him. The 6-foot-5, 205-pound lefty has been in the Dominican Republic since Oct. 8 and is hoping to compete for a spot in the Cardinals' starting rotation in 2010.
"You've got to keep in mind that the organization might have a different plan for you," Jukich said. "I'm just excited for an opportunity to pitch at the big-league level — not that I didn't get a chance with Cincinnati. Now, I'm going in to spring training trying to earn a fifth [starter] spot."

The Cardinals also took Matt Meyer from Cleveland during the AAA phase - he'll play in Memphis in 2010. _________________ Mike

First order of business, get this guy on a diet. He's growing too fast! _________________ You see, you spend a good piece of your life gripping a baseball, and in the end it turns out that it was the other way around all the time. ~Jim Bouton, Ball Four, 1970 |

From that analysis, sounds like he could go for the IHOP Reyes diet.
Interesting to see that he'll be competing to be a starter. More the merrier I suppose.
Does it bug anyone that today during this draft, most of these teams just threw the equivalent of a full years salary for many young Americans (25k) out the window to get a look at a minor league pitcher for a few weeks? _________________
